    What Is the MATE Act?

    The MATE Act requires a one-time 8-hour training on substance use disorder and opioid prescribing safety for all new and renewing DEA registrants. NPs must complete this before initial registration or during renewal.

    • State controlled substance permit (if applicable)
    • National Provider Identifier (NPI)
    • MATE Act 8-hour course certificate
    • Collaborative agreement (in some states)

    DEA Registration Process for Nurse Practitioners

    1. Complete MATE Act Education

    2. Obtain State Licensure and Prescriptive Authority

    Apply through your state Board of Nursing. Requirements may include a supervising physician agreement.

    3. Get Your NPI Number

    Visit NPPES to apply for free. Issued within 1–5 business days.

    4. Create an Online DEA Account

    Go to DEA Diversion Control and complete DEA Form 224. Choose Mid-Level Practitioner as your business activity.

    5. Pay the Application Fee

    Fee is $888 for a 3-year term. Renew every 3 years using DEA Form 224a.
