MATE Act Summary
The 2023 MATE Act mandates that all healthcare professionals registering with the DEA complete 8 hours of education on treating patients with opioid or substance use disorders. This must be completed before initial registration or at renewal.

DEA Registration: Step-by-Step for PAs
1. MATE Act Training
Use MATECME.com to satisfy the DEA MATE Act requirements. Complete the 8-hour requirement and retain your certificate.
2. Apply for a State License
Board certification (PANCE) and background check required. Apply through the state licensing body for PAs.
3. Obtain Your NPI
Apply via NPPES. Free and usually issued within 1–3 business days.
4. Complete DEA Form 224
Visit the DEA website and choose Mid-Level Practitioner. Select drug schedules II–V and enter your license, NPI, and practice address.
5. Pay the Fee and Submit
Fee is $888 for three years. Processing takes 4–6 weeks. Renew every 3 years using Form 224a.
