DEA Registration Guide for Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs)

The MATE Act mandates that all DEA-registered practitioners complete a one-time, eight-hour training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
Introduction
Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) must register with the DEA to legally prescribe Schedule II–V medications. This guide explains when and how DOs should register and meet all federal requirements, including the MATE Act.
What is the MATE Act?
The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, enacted in 2023, mandates that all DEA registrants complete 8 hours of education focused on substance use disorders and opioid prescribing best practices. This is a one-time training requirement.

- Unrestricted DO license in the practicing state
- State Controlled Substance License (if required)
- National Provider Identifier (NPI)
- MATE Act training certificate
Step-by-Step DEA Registration for DOs
1. Complete the MATE Act Training
Use MATECME.com to satisfy the DEA MATE Act requirement. Training must cover safe opioid prescribing and addiction management.
2. Obtain Your State DO License
You must be licensed in the state where you plan to prescribe. Submit credentials to your state osteopathic board including COMLEX scores and residency proof.
3. Get Your NPI Number
Visit NPPES to apply. Required for both billing and DEA registration.
4. Complete DEA Form 224
Go to DEA Diversion Control. Indicate your profession as Practitioner and select Schedules II–V.
5. Pay the Application Fee
Fee is $888 for a 3-year term. Pay online via debit or credit card.
6. Submit and Await Approval
Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks. Renew every 3 years using Form 224a.

- Apply at least 2–3 months before beginning practice.
- Employers may reimburse the application cost.
